Ha! All I can remember is that in first grade (1955), we all had to do our own version of "I Like Ike" as a drawing with our crayons. He was running for President at the time. I graduated from HS in 1967, so hopefully, this helps you figure out where I am in the timeline! Have a great week, John! ~ Nancy

You met Harry Truman?! I must admit, I've a problem with Harry. While the protesters were denouncing Johnson and Nixon, I followed our involvement in Vietnam all the way back to "where the buck stops".
Not many know Harry diverted 8 to 12 US Merchant Marine troopships from bringing American troops home from WWII, forcing them to transport cheese-eating-surrender-monkeys to Vietnam so they could recolonize it. Truman committed the US into an act of warfare against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
Ironically, the first organized protest against our unConstitutional act of aggression on a sovereign country began with these enlisted men back in 1945. The crew of the Winchester Victory sent Truman a cable and all 88 noncoms on the Pachaug Victory sent a letter to the War Shipping Administration in DC. The cable read in part, "…vigorously protest the use of …American vessels…for the purpose of engaging in hostilities to further the imperialist policies of foreign governments…". When the US assisted the French in a full-scale invasion in 1946, it spurred an American movement against the war.
Truman died in Dec 1972, two and a half years before the "Last Chopper Out of Saigon" on Monday, May 12, 1975. I wonder what went through his mind as he watched the upcoming 30th anniversary of his decision.

I have been railing about the encroachment on our 9th and 10th Amendment rights for years. And I'm not too damn happy about losing so much of our 1st Amendment rights either. Citizens of the USA have the right to peaceful assembly yet this has been severely curtailed in a martial law fashion a few too many times within the last decade.
What I would like to see curtailed is our unrestricted right to vote. When citizens are too lazy to learn basic civics and know what is politically current they have no right to vote. We have no one to blame but ourselves for voting in idiots (repeatedly!!!) to run the show.
So, maybe we're both nuts.

Thanks for connecting with me, John ~ We most definitely are on the same page, except I'm a little more of a "Reagan Republican". I was only in first grade when Ike came into office! ;-D

I have myself listed as a Charles Sumner Republican, one of the movers and shakers in the birth of the Republican Party. 'Tis a real shame it has wandered so far off track as to be unrecognizable. Well, that's what happens when Dixiecrats are converted for votes.
One of my favorite books is Patriots: the Vietnam Remembered by Both Sides by Christian Appy. Have read it so many times it is falling apart.
